4am, we are starting the motor, putting it into
reverse, pulling the throttle, and the boat does not move. It turned out that we
had a very low tide that morning and the boat was stuck in the mud a solid foot
and a half. Blame the harbour master for giving us a slip which grounded us, but
also blame us for not double-checking the tide charts. Oliver was so upset about
this latest mishap that he decided to get a car and drive home. We all respected
his decision. - We again looked at what we could do and were relieved that the
weather forecast started to look much better if we would stay close to shore. It
is quite funny, it spoke about 20 knots of wind and 10-foot seas (which would
have scared me quite a bit going out of the Golden Gate 2 weeks ago) but now we
thought "ah, piece of cake!". So we left at 11ish and then actually
had a very nice, smooth ride all day long. We even set the spinnaker
wing-on-wing, a novelty, and enjoyed the ride along the dreaded Point Arena. In
the night we decided that we did not need to have Bodega Bay as a security
option and headed straight for Point Reyes, another cape where the weather
normally is wilder than along the straight coastlines.
